In North Macedonia diesel fuel cost just £0.91 per litre; our fuel tank held 900 litres (giving us a range of almost 3,000 miles) so we made sure we fuelled up before we reached the Greek border. Our motor insurance only covered us for the EU so whenever we crossed a border out of Europe we had to buy vehicle insurance – usually €50 for two weeks’ cover.
It was mid-October when we drove through the Galichica mountains. All around us were forests of deciduous trees showing off their autumnal colours. As the road rose to 3,000 feet the surrounding hills and valleys were glowing in the sunshine, displaying colours from green to bronze, from red to yellow. Mile after mile, the scenery was just stunning. My phone camera didn’t stand a chance of capturing the sheer beauty of it all.
