End Of TripSpain

Europe

A 20 minute walk into Aranjuez along the banks of the River Tagus

We spent a week or so slowly travelling north through Spain. Everything seemed incredibly expensive after Morocco.  We stayed a few days in Aranjuez, just south of Madrid.  The weather was good and we could walk along the river into the town where there were a wide variety of shops and restaurants.

When we reached Burgos it was raining heavily, preventing any chance of outdoor cooking.  We found a traditional Spanish restaurant that served food cooked on an asador, a huge wood fired clay oven.  We chose a fixed priced menu of three courses – including morcilla de Burgos, a tasty local delicacy rather like (but better than) our black pudding, followed by suckling baby lamb cooked in the asador.  A chilled bottle of red wine was put on the table for us to imbibe as required.  Dessert was followed by coffee and liqueurs.  The total cost for that memorable meal was just over £70 which we felt was excellent value and a fitting last meal before we left Europe.

Brittany Ferries transported us from Santander to Portsmouth, a voyage of just over 28 hours. We had been away from home for nearly seven months and we had driven about 13,000 miles – we were eager to be reunited with our beautiful family.

PS  In my post “Tata to Zagora” I described a chance encounter with two other British couples.

Meeting with Jim and Krysia – and then Phil and Issie
