Guelmim

Camping Aain Nakhla, Guelmim Es

We spent a couple of days in Guelmim (sounds like Goo-el-mim) where Salah and his family run a small campsite outside the town, close to a big Marjane supermarket. When were were in Morocco during the Covid outbreak, Salah had helped us to get booster vaccinations in Guelmim.

When we arrived at the site we met two German tourists who had been travelling with their wives in Mauritania.  They told us that the temperature there had been nearly 40°.  The women had flown home to Germany to prepare for Christmas and the men had been instructed to drive back to Germany in time for the festivities – they had booked their ferry from Africa for the 23rd December.  I thought that was cutting it a bit fine.

The weather was very warm in Guelmim (min 17° max 28°) and each evening we ate dinner sitting outside our truck – camel tagine and Berber omelette served with salad and home baked bread.  The day we were leaving Salah came by holding a pair of white fluffy rabbits by their ears – not dead yet but destined for the cooking pot.  We felt quite relieved we wouldn’t be around for dinner that evening.

We couldn’t turn the truck in the narrow space so had to reverse out
