The Middle Atlas Mountains

Azrou, warm in the sunshine – below freezing at night

We spent a couple of days in Fez and then drove south towards the Atlas Mountains.  We stopped overnight at Azrou, elevation 5,000 feet.  It was sunny and warm enough to sit outside in the afternoon. Overnight the temperature plummeted to -2° but inside the truck it was a cosy 18°.  The first one up in the morning had the (blue) job of switching on the diesel heating which rapidly brought the inside temperature up to 22°.

Snow and ice all around us at 7,000 ft

We enjoyed the drive south through the mountains to Midelt.  It was dry and sunny and the roads were clear of snow although there were patches of snow and ice around us.  We passed wooded areas where macaque monkeys provided an attraction for tourists.  As we climbed higher the scenery looked more like a moonscape, mile upon mile of barren uplands, home to nomadic shepherds who grazed  their sheep and goats on the rocky terrain.

At 7,000 feet, a layer of cloud hung below the mountain peaks
