We stayed for two nights on the banks of the River Ziz, the deep gorge providing a spectacular backdrop. The weather was sunny but windy and we were abe to enjoy the warm sunshine until the sun disappeared prematurely behind the mountain a good hour before sunset.

There were olive groves along the wide river bank as well as pomegranate trees and an abundance of colourful wild flowers. Almond trees were in full blossom. You could walk along the dry river bed where there was a sufficient trickle of water to form pools on the curve of the river, deep enough for swimming – who could resist? However, skinny dipping was not possible as there were other walkers nearby and the water was gin clear.

We drove into the Middle Atlas Mountains towards Azrou, our route took us up to 6,000 feet. The weather was fine and the roads were clear. We passed the cedar forest where groups of macaque monkeys provided entertainment for the tourists.
