We stayed three days in Tromsö and hooked up with fellow travellers, Grant and Kim, Australians who had had their truck converted in Poland in 2017 at the same time as we had ours done. Over the years Tony had been in regular contact with Grant and got to know him well – although never had they met face to face until Tromsö. We had a splendid evening together and, fuelled with a little beer and wine, the time passed much too quickly. It was good to put faces to names and we hoped our paths would cross again during the next few weeks.
Hunting, shooting and fishing were popular sports in those parts and it was the hunting season for wild geese and hares. That weekend we met a some hunters who were holding a competition for their pointer dogs judging them for their skill in finding a bird and then remaining perfectly still until the hunter was able to flush out the quarry to take the shot – no birds were actually killed during the competition.
Travelling in a camper van in Norway was a joy, you could stop to rest and have a cuppa at secluded lay-bys and there were plenty of opportunities to stay overnight in clearings in the woods or overlooking a fjord.
