Tromsö was a port on the west coast of Norway, 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The port was famous for its old wooden buildings – and, more importantly (some may say), the city boasted the most northerly McDonald’s!

We had lunch at a fish restaurant on the waterfront. At one end of the premises was a wet fish counter. In the restaurant there was a huge ornamental fish tank (12 feet high and about 40 feet long) and we were able to enjoy our lunch whilst watching cod, halibut and wolffish swimming around – for display purposes only, we assumed.

We had sushimi of whale meat, halibut and salmon followed by ramen noodles with king crab and the freshest prawns I have ever tasted. Washed down with a few beers the bill was £124. We also purchased some fish cakes, smoked salmon and a fish pie from the wet fish counter.
