The Todra Gorge

The Todra valley
The road up to the gorge

We spent a night near Todra Gorge, a 500 metre deep canyon carved by the river into the soft limestone rock.  A place of magnificent beauty in the High Atlas Mountains.

At the Todra camp site, the guardian was not very welcoming and tried to insist that Tony filled out the guest registration forms (a legal requirement) before we had had a chance to park the truck.  After a long drive it was more important to find your spot, do your settling in chores and get the kettle on before completing formalities.  The guardian’s grumpiness encouraged us to leave the following morning.  No-one else was staying at the site.

We travelled on to Ouarzazate (sounds like Wazzerzat) where there was a Carrefour supermarket.  As were were pondering in the wine section, a young staff member offered his help.  He went to get a case of wine from the store, then helped us pack up our shopping and wheeled the loaded trolley across the main road to where the truck was parked.  He lifted the heavy shopping up into the truck and returned the empty trolley to the store.  He seemed pleased with our tip of 20 dirhams (£1.56).

The road from Ouarzazate to Zagora took us up to almost 6,000 feet
This was the view if you looked over the edge!
