Over the Sea to Tanger-Med

Buying ferry ticket to Morocco

It was the first week of November and we Brexit Brits could only sojourn 90 days in Europe.  Our travel clock was ticking and it was time to leave for Morocco.  We visited Carlos at Viajes Normandie in Algeciras and paid €230 for one way ferry ticket to Tanger-Med, a 90 minute ferry journey.  A return ticket was only a few more €s but our plan was to return by a different route via Italy.

Moroccan officials were present on board the ferry and we handed in our completed immigration forms and had our passports stamped.  When we disembarked at Tanger-Med our vehicle documents were processed by Customs but they didn’t check the inside of our truck – although we had taken the precaution of stowing our alcohol out of sight.  Before we left the Port we purchased third party vehicle insurance for which we normally paid €250 for the truck and the motor scooter.  We were shocked to be charged €400 – no choice but to pay it.

We stayed at a camp site near Asilah on the Atlantic coast

When Tony plugged the truck into the camp site’s shore power, sparks and smoke started coming from our inverters and there was a strong smell of burning.  Tony later discovered that the shore power was 385v instead of 240v.
He immediately cut the electricity and, when everything had cooled down, he re- connected to a different supply.  Everything  seemed to be working OK but Tony was extremely shaken and was furious with the camp site.  He chose not to pursue the matter as the site manager’s English was poor – so we just moved on the next morning.  Tony marked the offending power supply so no other visitor suffered damage.

It would have been the end of our trip if our power supply had been compromised.  Tony contacted Mastervolt in the UK for advice (reassurance) but they recommended we had the whole system checked out – not much chance of that happening in Morocco so we decided we would watch and wait.
